Conduit has announced the launch of a marketplace for publishers who use its toolbar. Called Conduit Open it basically lets publishers share their content with more than 200,000 other community toolbar publishers. This according to Conduit will help the publisher content reach more than 60,000,000 users of community toolbars of the above 200,000 publishers.
According to Techcrunch, the toolbar can be a useful marketing tool for companies because it helps market brands by showing logos to users every time they surf the net. And now multiple brands can tap into this potential. The offerings include major brands such as Fox News, Lufthansa, Major League Baseball, Greenpeace and more.
That in essence is the biggest advantage of this move – exposure and branding. 200,000 publishers is not a small number, and though it might not help small publishers shoot their traffic through the roof, it will certainly have an impact at some point in the traffic. For bigger publishers however, this can be an excellent opportunity to drive more quality – targeted traffic to their websites.
Conduit’s real success is in the fact that it is bringing these publishers on to the desktop – it is social media on the desktop, consider it somewhat akin to what social bookmarking did to traffic on blogs. iWin a casual gaming company is an interesting case study in that light.
For iWin, daily revenue from search has increased about 50% and product revenue about 150% since the company began using the tool, according to Terrie Ijams, game release manager and merchandising specialist at iWin, San Francisco. She attributes between 3% and 5% of the company’s overall sales to the computer desktop toolbar. (Source)
Conduit itself earns its revenue by tying up with Google and having its search within the pbulisher toolbar. It is similar to having Google custom search on your blog/website. It is banking on the advertising revenue generated through the search tool to build itself a business model. And till now it is certainly working fine. Conduit President Adam Boyden says. “We are a profitable company, and growing quickly. Any function companies offer online can be added to the toolbar.”
In a country like India which still has a high volume of users accessing the web through cyber cafes and whose points of interactions on the web are limited to search and email, these toolbars can be a godsend. This is definitely something Indian publishers should look at and test for brand awareness and traffic.
